Room Essentials:
- Lamps: Can be very handy, especially for students living with a roommate. A desk lamp allows for late night studying without disturbing the roommate.
- Rugs: Some rooms have carpeting and some rooms do not.
- White Board: Be sure to bring markers as well!
- Blue Painter’s Tape: Used to hang items on the wall. No nails allowed.
- Fridge/Microwave: The fridge should not exceed 2.9 cubic feet and the maximum wattage for microwaves is 700 watts (both should be Energy Star rated).
- Dishes and utensils.
- Fan: A must have for the warm weather, especially for those living on a higher floor. Also, the white noise helps to drown out the sounds of the late nighters.
- Stereo/iPod dock: Sometimes the laptop speakers don't quite cut it. Be sure to bring headphones as well.
- Room Fresheners: Please note that these should have approval from roommates. If there is not roommate approval, then they are not permitted for use.
- Trash Can: These aren't provided for each individual room.
Bedding:
- Pillows, extra-long twin sheets, a comforter, and extra blankets.
- Remember that ALL beds mattresses are extra-long twin size when you purchase bedding items.
Clothing & Laundry:
- Be sure to pack clothing for ALL TYPES of weather and activities during the school year. It can get as high as the 100's or as low as subzero.
- BRING A HEAVY JACKET, as well as boots, gloves and a hat.
- A rain jacket, umbrella, and sunglasses are essentials.
- If you plan to exercise during the year, make sure to pack plenty of workout clothes.
- Hand towels, bath towels, shower sandals, and a bathrobe.
- For laundry, pack detergent and dryer sheets, as well as a laundry basket or bag.
Toiletries:
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, soap, shaving cream, razor, contact lens case, contact solution, comb/brush, blow dryer, hair gel/spray.
- Toothbrush case, soap case, extra razor blades, cotton swabs, nail clippers, Band-Aids, Kleenex, and a bath tote (it is nice way to keep stuff together).
- Prescription medicine, over the counter medicine for headaches and allergies, sunscreen, body lotion. Be sure prescriptions are in original bottles with your name on the label.
Desk & School Supplies:
- Computer or laptop, computer or laptop lock, laptop case, pens, pencils, paper for taking notes, binders and folders for handouts and notes.
- We recommend a surge protector for computer equipment.
- Scissors, tape, stapler, ruler, paper clips, envelopes and stamps, calendar, sticky notes.
- It's a very good idea to purchase something to backup computer files, such as a portable USB storage device.
What NOT to bring:
- Cooking equipment with an exposed heating coil (toaster ovens, hot plates, steam cookers, deep fryers, electric skillets, space heater, gas or charcoal grills, etc.).
- Halogen lamps, electric heaters, candles, incense, propane canisters, lighter fluid, charcoal, live Christmas trees, ceiling fans, air conditioners, and hookahs.
- TV wall mounts, HDTV wall mounts, wall-mounted shelving, wall-mounted mirrors, lofts or concrete blocks to elevate beds or other furniture.
- Weapons of any kind (including handguns, rifles, shotguns, any firearms, knives, darts, archery equipment, B-B guns, air guns, pellet guns (metal or plastic), paintball guns, fireworks, etc.).
- Animals or pets (fish are the only pets allowed in a 10-gallon capacity aquarium or less).
- Alcoholic beverages: Students 21 years of age or older are permitted to have alcoholic beverages in the privacy of their rooms, but only if all roommates and/or visitors are also 21 years of age or older.
- Illegal substances, drug paraphernalia, and empty alcoholic beverage containers or other prohibited decorative containers,
- Regular extension cords – use power strips with a built in breaker that is U.L. approved
- Wireless routers.
