The civil engineering degree program is an EAC-accredited (ABET) curriculum that integrates the core Rockhurst values with a robust exposure to a variety of civil engineering specialties, which enables graduates to become licensed Professional Engineers.
Program Overview
Image
The combination of the strong Jesuit education at Rockhurst University coupled with the strong technical engineering instruction at the University of Missouri-Kansas City produces alumni/ae who are well-placed in the engineering economy, who are becoming professionally licensed as engineers, and who are poised to be able leaders in their organizations.
Learning Outcomes
- Solve complex engineering problems
- Create designs that solve problems
- Communicate effectively
- Apply ethics in engineering settings
- Function effectively on design teams
- Analyze and interpret data
- Engage in service to the profession
Program Outcomes
The Civil Engineering program at Rockhurst University expects its graduates, within a few years of graduation, to:
- Be actively committed to the Jesuit value of service, utilizing their engineering skills and social compassion.
- Leverage their engineering communication, problem-solving, design, and application skills to benefit the world with all its ambiguities, opportunities, and challenges.
- Engage with the communities they serve with the broad knowledge and communication skills gained through their Jesuit, liberal-arts education.
- Grow their careers to become more valuable to the world at large.
- Serve as leaders in their communities and professional environments.
What is civil engineering?
Simply described, a civil engineering degree specializes in the environment that has been built around us. This field of study, however, is far from simple. From the construction of roads, buildings, bridges, or water supply systems, to managing a construction site, to analyzing research, civil engineers are responsible for the very foundation of the society we know.

Popular Courses
A calculus-based introduction to physics for students majoring in science or engineering. With an emphasis on the scientific method and problem-solving through physical and conceptual reasoning, the course content will focus on a study of Newtonian mechanics, thermodynamics, sound and waves with applications for scientists and engineers.
Fundamentals of statics; static equilibrium and introduction to elements of mechanics to elastic materials.
This course provides students with a working knowledge of the design and performance of Asphaltic Concrete (AC) and Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) mixtures through understanding the properties and requirements of the component materials and their effects on subsequent performance.
Comprehensive and realistic design project using the systems approach. Design choices and their effect upon the environment. Design constraints include constructability, minimization of environmental impact and cost-effectiveness. Managerial and professional aspects of design practice.
Degree Info
- Upper-level engineering classes are taken at the neighboring University of Missouri-Kansas City to take advantage of their engineering laboratories and expertise. The courses are automatically transferred to the Rockhurst registrar at the end of each semester.
- The engineering curricula require an engineering internship and 60 hours of community service.
- Civil engineering students will engage in highly interactive projects that are simultaneously challenging, educational, and enjoyable! One such project is creating a bridge out of sticks that must hold 75 pounds of weight, as shown in the video below.
