The Medical Spanish Graduate Certificate equips health care career professionals with a valuable, stackable credential designed to enhance their ability to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking patients. This certification not only strengthens language proficiency but also expands professional competencies, improving the quality of patient care and engagement.


Program Overview
This program consists of a combination of badges that result in completing a medical Spanish graduate certificate (12 credit hours). Each badge will be worth three credit hours and can only be taken at Rockhurst University. RU offers two starting points – one for beginners or those with limited knowledge of Spanish (summer start only) and one for experienced speakers (multiple start dates). Graduate students will complete all courses online in a combination of synchronous and asynchronous classes.
Note: A Medical Spanish minor and an undergraduate Medical Spanish certificate are also available.
Learning outcomes
- Gain a working-level knowledge of basic and medical Spanish for nurses and health care professionals. This includes general and medical vocabulary and verb conjugation for use in a clinical setting
- Learn and practice the technical language of medicine in Spanish and conduct conversations in the Hispanic culture
- Improve oral proficiency in Spanish needed in medicine
- Practice patient and practitioner interactions in different medical settings
- Gain knowledge about Hispanic cultures and the role of health care providers within those cultures
Program Outcomes
After you complete a graduate certificate in medical Spanish, you will be prepared to provide elevated levels of care for Spanish speakers in a clinical setting. Multiple positions within the medical field could benefit from this certificate, including nurses, physical and occupational therapists, dentists, doctors, care coordinators, medical assistants and other health care professionals.
