Community Work Study

COMMUNITY WORK-STUDY APPLICATION

Did you know that a specific portion of work-study funding is dedicated to service in the community that involves working with kids? The Federal government believes college students must be civically engaged and help youth with literacy and strengthen basic skills. A certain percentage of federal work-study is set aside for this vital work. 

Students are employed by the Rockhurst University work-study program but perform the work at an area school or youth-serving non-profit organization through the Community Work-Study Program. Students may work as a tutor helping with homework and basic skills; lead arts and crafts activities; mentor youth in character-building programs or assist with after-school programming at one of the following four organizations. Students must be available to work during the hours of operation and provide their own transportation. Most of the sites are either on the bus line or are close enough to walk. Rockhurst students will receive training and on-site orientation.

Getting Started

Ready to take your Rockhurst work-study to the community? Getting started is easy! Here are the steps.

  1. Make sure you are eligible for work-study.
  2. Read the policies and procedures for Community Work-Study.
  3. New and returning students must apply through Paycom (found on the Rockhurst portal) by going to the Human Resources page and click on “Campus work-study positions ”
  4. Students will need to filter by Student position type for general work-study positions and by Community position type for community-based work-study positions on the job listing page to see open positions and then create an account within Paycom.
  5. Schedule an interview time with Alicia Douglas.
  6. Interview and meet the staff/teachers at the community organization
  7. Attend the CWS orientation/training- important information about time cards and other procedures.
  8. Get started tutoring youth at one of our community organization partner sites.
