Ignatian Spirituality Center of Kansas City Joins Rockhurst University
Two Jesuit apostolates in Kansas City are joining forces in a move meant to expand the reach of programming for those interested in spiritual growth.
The Ignatian Spirituality Center of Kansas City, which has operated as a nonprofit organization under the auspices of the Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province, is becoming part of Rockhurst University, a Jesuit university founded in 1910 that is also one of the works in the province.
As part of the University, the Ignatian Spirituality Center will continue its primary mission of offering the Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life to people in the external community, as well as courses, retreats and days of reflection based on spiritual practices and insights developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, a religious order of Roman Catholic priests and brothers known as the Jesuits.
“The Ignatian Spirituality Center’s success is reflected in the hundreds of people who have benefited from its offerings and in the strong network of dedicated volunteers that make it happen,” said Sandra Cassady, Ph.D., president of Rockhurst University. “We’re excited about the possibilities to build on the strong foundation they’ve established as we partner together.”
The Center will be housed within the Office of Mission and Ministry at Rockhurst and a search for a full-time director will begin soon.
“Rockhurst’s existing community outreach and strong alumni network will assist the Center in making its offerings that help people deepen their relationship with God even more widely available,” said Br. Carl Caceres, S.J., vice president for Mission and Ministry. “Having this resource on campus will also allow us to continue to strengthen spiritual growth opportunities among Rockhurst students, faculty and staff.”
During the integration process, the Center and the University worked through the state of Missouri to officially unite the two nonprofit organizations. Representatives from the Center’s board and the University are working together to ensure a smooth transition.
“Joining forces with Rockhurst University will boost our ability to offer the enriching spiritual growth opportunities that we know people are searching for,” said Mary Mooney Burns, board chair of the Ignatian Spirituality Center. “The University’s administrative structure and support will allow us to concentrate our focus on the heart of our mission — offering the Spiritual Exercises.”
