University Community Mourns the Death of Pope Francis

Rockhurst University Companions,
Rockhurst joins the world in mourning the loss of Pope Francis, who embodied the values Christ taught us: helping the less fortunate, calling for peace, and ensuring every person is treated as a child of God. As the first Jesuit pope he inspired people of all faiths by embodying the Jesuit way of proceeding, calling us to listen to the experiences of all people, and to promote a justice rooted in love and respect. He was our shepherd who taught us what it means to live our faith with courage, mercy, and love. We find strength in all that he has taught us and the love that he shared.
In Francis’ last public address, he preached care of the marginalized, the vulnerable, and migrants, saying, “I would like all of us to hope anew and to revive our trust in others, including those who are different than ourselves.” May God grant us the grace to heed his wish.
Let us also pray for the College of Cardinals when they gather at the Conclave to choose a successor to our beloved Francis. May the Spirit guide them to choose a shepherd who will be open to the needs and realities of the Church and the world.
Everyone is invited to a Mass celebrating the life of Pope Francis on Thursday, April 24, at 12:15 p.m. in the Mabee Chapel. The chapel will also be open all day and night on Tuesday for quiet prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.
