Rockhurst Junior Celebrates 21 Years With Charitable Donation
Instead of dedicating the focus of his 21st birthday on excessive celebrating, Rockhurst University junior David Wallisch asked his friends, family, and the community to donate toward St. James Place Soup Kitchen, a community kitchen that provides an evening meal for 200 to 250 people every Monday through Friday.
On Wednesday, Dec. 8., Wallisch presented a check for $2,100 to Mike Matthews, the director of St. James Place. Wallisch baked over 200 cupcakes to pass out as dessert with the Wednesday night meal.
Wallisch has volunteered at St. James Place for more than two years. His involvement began after he participated in a service-learning project for his English class freshman year.
The money he raised for the kitchen will be used towards funding a new roof.
“They have a leak in their current roof,” Wallisch said, “and have patched it for the winter, but they will be replacing it in the spring.”
