Campus Ministry Kicks Off Recognition of Catholic Social Teaching

The holy season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on Wednesday, March 1, and Rockhurst University’s Campus Ministry office is recognizing the season by highlighting the traditions of social teaching at the heart of the Catholic faith.

Between the week of Feb. 26 and coming to a close the week of April 23, Campus Ministry is encouraging the campus community to join them in spotlighting one of the tenets each week. Campus Ministry will be sharing prayers, petitions at each Sunday’s 6 p.m. student Mass, prayer cards in Mabee Chapel, and signs and information posted around campus about each principle’s significance to the Catholic faith:

  • Common Good (Week of Feb. 26): The call to do the most good for all people.
  • Life and Dignity of the Human Person (Week of March 12): Recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of every human life.
  • Call to Family, Community and Participation (Week of March 19): Emphasizing active participation in society, and the important role that family plays in that participation.
  • Human Rights and Responsibilities (Week of March 26): Human life’s sanctity means that human rights must be protected and that society meets every human’s most basic needs.
  • Option for the Poor and Vulnerable (Week of April 2): The poor are often society’s most vulnerable members; Catholic social teaching indicates that we
  • The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers (Week of April 9): The economy should serve the people, not the other way around, and Catholic social teaching calls on us to stand up for the dignity of all labor.
  • Care for God’s Creation (Week of April 16): Acting as stewards of God’s creation on Earth.
  • Global Solidarity (Week of April 23): Catholic social teaching recognizes that we are part of a global community, and that the struggles for justice throughout the world are universal and a call to us all to be peacemakers.
