We live in a culture that valorizes “making use of” time. We mark it with setting goals, completing tasks, and scheduling events. But Dr. Sheila Liming, associate professor of writing at Champlain College in Vermont, makes a compelling argument that our relationship to time and the way we structure it has contributed to an epidemic of loneliness and social dislocation. Her acclaimed 2023 book, "Hanging Out: The Radical Power of Killing Time," invites us to reimagine our relationship to time as a pathway to more fulfilling lives.
