It’s not easy to choose what you’re going to study for the next few years, and that’s okay! Many students come to college without a major and find their way as things go on, but there are a few things you can do to help you make a choice.
Look at your interests. A great way to find your major is to look at what you’re interested in. It may seem obvious, but if you’re interested in math, a mathematics degree may not necessarily be what you’re looking for. Take a look at everything you can integrate an interest in math into and start from there. Take some introductory courses and see if you may want to delve further!
Look at what you’re good at. If you’re having trouble seeing what you want, start with what you’ve succeeded with in the past. Just like with the last point, you can integrate that into a major. Some things are easier for you than they may be for other people, and that’s a great way to excel at a career.
Don’t be afraid to change. Tons of college students change their major partway through college, including the author of this very article! You have ample time to finish a degree over four years of college and many students take an extra year for a variety of reasons. If you’re not doing well in a major you chose, talk to an advisor and see if they can help you pick something new.
