It’s a daunting task to move anywhere new, and college is no different. A dorm room is a far cry from your room back home, but there are a few tips and tricks that can help with the transition.
Pack your clothes strategically. It can be hard to come up with a new outfit when you’re headed to classes every day, so make sure that you bring a good variety. Different colors, styles, and especially weathers are all important to take with you. You don’t want to be stuck with just two pairs of pants once the winter rolls around or find out that you only brought one shirt that isn’t black. If all else fails, the Rockhurst Bookstore has everything you need to round out your wardrobe and show your school spirit!
Decorate your space. The best way to feel more at home in your new room is by decorating it just the way you would your own bedroom. Posters, lights, and desk trinkets will make the dorm room a cozy and warm place for you to return to after a long day in class. Make sure to also check with your roommate on how you can combine efforts to create a beautiful space for you both to reside in.
Humor your parents a bit. Saying goodbye is incredibly difficult for mom and dad, so let them stick around for a bit and help you get everything set up. Fitted sheets are hard to put on by yourself anyways. Give your family as much time as they need to get accustomed to your new situation too. It’ll make it a lot easier when they’re calling you that they have one less thing to ask about.
